National Highways to deliver over 150 additional emergency areas on UK motorways

National Highways has launched an emergency area retrofit programme to build more than 150 additional emergency areas on all lane running (ALR) motorways across the country. This is part of the government’s second Road Investment Strategy, which will see it make a £390 million investment to make roads safer for everyone on the road.

In response to the Transport Select Committee’s report “The roll out and safety of smart motorways”, the government is aiming to deliver 50% more emergency areas across the ALR network compared to January 2022.

To protect road users and the workforce while new emergency areas are under construction, the inside left lane will be closed and a 50mph speed limit will be in place. Lanes two, three and four remain open to keep traffic flowing and ultimately reduce the risk of any incidents.
